Jacksonville, FL - Charlie Gaither Becton, age 76, died Wednesday, October 26, 2016.
Mr. Becton was born October 28, 1939 in Brunswick, TN to Tommie and Esther (Settles) Becton and was the fourth of ten children. At an early age he displayed an adventurist spirit which - after graduating high school - he enlisted in the United States Navy and "set sail" on a challenging - yet fulfilling career!
It was during that career - in 1965 - he met and wed the former Ruth Yvonne Barrington. A consummate husband, father, family man, provider - in spite of the challenges of his Navy career (Vietnam deployments, multiple sea duties, short-notice temporary duty assignments) Mr. Becton was a strong/effective leader whose professional and personal traits ensured the highest safety and comfort needs of his charge and family – wife Yvonne and their children - were taken care of!
“I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction: 'I served in the United States Navy.'” -- President John F. Kennedy
Mr. Becton was preceded in death by his wife Yvonne, parents, brothers Willie Leroy Becton, Eddie Becton, sisters Bertha Williams, Irene Williamson, Clarissa Wyatt and Alberta Davis. Left to honor Mr. Becton and remember his love are sons, Glenn Barrington, David Barrington, Andre Becton, Alanza Becton and daughter Mellanesse Becton. Surviving siblings/family include sisters Jewell (James) Phillips, Jerri (Troy) Caraway, brother Tommie Earl Becton, six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
The family will greet friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday – November 6, 2016 at D.M. Baker Mortuary | 8967 Lem Turner Road | Jacksonville, FL 32208 | Tel: 904/365-8996.
